The original work is dated 1898 and is kept at the MET Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, USA. The author is initially self-taught and learns to paint from his mother. In 1884, Winslow Homer travels to Florida and the Caribbean several times, where he finds inspiration to paint numerous marine landscapes. This painting is set in the Bahamas, specifically in the capital Nassau. In the foreground a long wall, inside which there is a door, divides the road from the ocean. Behind the wall, beautiful, lush, red-flowered plants break out. Homer uses simple shapes and sharp outlines, as well as a continuous contrast of light and shadow. The natural and spontaneous style of his works, as well as the artist's interest in natural light and live painting sometimes remind us of the impressionist style, an art with which Homer never came into direct contact. An artist independent of artistic conventions and endowed with great expressive power, Winslow Homer is now considered one of the greatest and most original American painters of the nineteenth century.
