Willows at sunset

This painting is dated 1888 and it is now kept in the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo. Van Gogh created it in Provence, after a period of severe depression and alcohol abuse. The colour is the main character of this canvas. This work, like many other paintings by Van Gogh, is inspired by Japanese art: yellow is the predominant colour in it and the sun is a clear reference to Japan: The Empire of the Rising Sun.

This painting is dated 1888 and it is now kept in the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo. Van Gogh created it in Provence, after a period of severe depression and alcohol abuse. During his train journey to Arles, the sun and the light of the Mediterranean capture him and inspire his brush strokes. His work is in full evolution. In a letter to his brother Theo he writes: "Drawing the picture with charcoal is useless, if you want a good design, you must follow directly with the colour." And it is the colour that is the main character of this canvas. A central blue strip, against which they stand out the simplified shapes of the willows, represented with a few brown lines, divides the sky and the field, which are painted in warm colours that vary in red, orange and yellow. The sun, a circle from which long veins start, spreads strength and energy. The tall, dry grass, with its browns, reds, oranges and greens, is placed in the foreground to balance the power of such a sky. This work, like many other paintings by Van Gogh, is inspired by Japanese art: yellow is the predominant colour in it and the sun is a clear reference to Japan: The Empire of the Rising Sun.
