" A Wheatfield, with Cypresses" are three almost identical paintings by Vincent Van Gogh made in 1889. The one painted in June is kept in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the one in September at the National Gallery in London and the third is part of a private collection. The works represent a windy day in three different times of the day, a typical characteristic of Impressionist artists. The cypress caught the attention of Van Gogh for its beauty and form, so much that he called it "beautiful in line and proportions like an Egyptian obelisk." The sky, which is the background, is painted with brushstrokes winding in different shades from blue to white, then merging with the lilac colour of the mountains. Thanks to the various shades of beige and a play of light and shadow, the artist manages to give an effect of movement and impetus to the cornfield, placed in the foreground. In the background there are bushes and small plants, placed in subdued by the imposing cypresses on the right side of the work. The shrub, as the sky and the wheat field, is coloured with wavy, sinuous brushstrokes, which manage to give the subjects a charge of energy and vitality that characterize the whole work. We could fall into this painting and feel the ears of wheat caressing our skin while the wind carries us on top of the clouds ... in a magical brushstroke. The feeling and deep love of Van Gogh for nature are evident here.
