The painting is dated 1888 and it is accomplished in Arles, in the "Yellow House" that Van Gogh has bought together with his friend Gauguin. The artist paints many pictures with sunflowers as subjects and for this reason, depending on the city in which they are painted, they are divided into two series: Paris series and Arles series. Subject of the painting are the sunflowers, so much loved by Van Gogh that, when he dies, his tomb is covered with them. They are represented through moving touches, which follow the movements of petals and leaves and thus acquire personality, come to life, charging themselves with a symbolic meaning, a metaphor of the vitality of nature. The result is a lively and joyful image. A characteristic trait of his painting is the use of colours to express emotions and moods, rather than to represent reality. The drawing of the colour is rough and dense. The lights and shadows originate from the pigments, as well as from the thickness of the chromatic mixture. The entire collection of sunflowers is dedicated to Gauguin, a friend with whom Van Gogh hopes to bring together a community of artists in their "Yellow House". But the two are very different in temperament and character: their friendship is marked by innumerable quarrels and arguments. When their paths divide, Van Gogh remains deeply marked and, following a quarrel, he cuts off his earlobe.
