"Noon - Rest from Work" was painted by Van Gogh, presumably around January 1890, during his admission to the psychiatric hospital of Saint-Paul-De-Mesole. Today we can admire this work at the Musée d'Orsay, where it has been conserved since 1986. It is one of the personal interpretations by Vincent of the famous Millet painting "Méridienne". In the work are depicted two peasants, a man and a woman, barefoot, lying on a wheat field, while they take a break from their hard work. In the background we can see animals and tools. The predominant colour of the painting is the yellow of the wheat field, in stark contrast to the blue colour used to paint the sky. The brush strokes are very vigorous, almost violent. They infuse a feeling of movement, you almost get the impression of feeling the wind surrounding peasants. The outlines of the subjects are clear enough, but not excessively, just to highlight the protagonists from the rest of the environment. This painting is part of a series of works called "copie", so called because the paintings are reproductions made by Van Gogh, belonging to other artists, which he believed had made a great contribution to modern art. It is no coincidence that most of the subjects represented in these works are farmers.
