Pink peach tree in blossom

Vincent Van Gogh paints this canvas in Arles, the village of Provence in the south of France where he lives in 1888 and 1889. It represents a peach tree, in the centre, solitary, in a field, illuminated by the strong light of the sun. Nature is the main protagonist of his paintings during his stay in Provence, as in this painting. After finishing the painting, he became aware of the departure of his first master, the painter Anton Mauve, and he decided to send the painting as a souvenir to this man's widow. In fact, in the lower left corner we read "Souvenir de Mauve. Vincent ".

The original work is dated 1888 and is kept at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Vincent Van Gogh paints this canvas in Arles, the village of Provence in the south of France where he lives in 1888 and 1889. He writes: " I intend once or another, as soon as I can, to go to the South, where there is even more colour and even more sun ... This summer, when I painted the landscape in Asnières, I saw more colour than in the past". The Mediterranean light and its variations has always aroused curiosity in the painters, especially in 1800, and Van Gogh does not remain indifferent to the charm of Mediterranean light and its warmth. The light invades the canvases that Vincent produces in those years and the colours of nature are enhanced by the brightness of the southern sun. This canvas represents a peach tree, in the centre, solitary, in a field, illuminated by the strong light of the sun. Nature is the main protagonist of his paintings during his stay in Provence, as in this painting. After finishing the painting, he became aware of the departure of his first master, the painter Anton Mauve, and he decided to send the painting as a souvenir to this man's widow.
