Landscape with House and Ploughman

Just the fact of having himself lived in a humble and poor environment made Van Gogh approach to the farming world. "Diggers, sowers, ploughmen, men and women, whom I now have to draw continuously. I must observe and draw everything that is part of a peasant's life, like many others have done and are doing. I am no longer as inept as I was before in front of nature".

Before devoting himself completely to the work of painter, Van Gogh was engaged as a lay preacher in the mining area of Borinage, Belgium. The miners were victims of the industrial exploitation of that time, and the artist was deeply affected by the precarious conditions in which they were forced to live. These are the words that the Dutch painter wrote to his brother Theo, in a letter addressed to him in 1881. Aiming to represent the living conditions of farmers and their spirit as realistically as possible, he not only observed them directly, but decided to live like them: he went to work in the fields, endured the adverse weather conditions and tried their hardships. In 1882 he stated: "After all, it is right and genuine that I had to live as an artist in their environment and I am sensitive to what I am trying to express."
