The original painting is kept at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and it is created by Van Gogh in the spring of 1887, a date written on the painting by the artist. The subject of the canvas is, as the title suggests, the imperial fritillaries: plants with big and full-bodied bulbs that bloom in spring and which can be found mainly in France and Holland in the gardens of villas and city palaces. The artist paints the flowers with their typical red-orange colour, inside a copper vase. Some of the features of Neo-Impressionist painting are present in this work, its greatest exponent is Paul Signac, with whom Van Gogh makes friends during his stay in Paris: the background of the painting, as well as the copper vase containing the flowers, is represented using dots close together; moreover, a contrast of complementary colours such as blue and orange is evident. During the period of realization of the work the painter courted Agostina Segatori, an Italian woman who ran the Tambourin Café located on the Boulevard de Clichy. It is thought that it is this woman who inspires him in his representations of still lives with flowers "that last forever". Her Café, thanks to the countless floral subjects painted by Van Gogh, with which Agostina papered the walls, becomes a real "artificial garden".
