The original work is dated 1888 and is kept at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. The portrayed beach is that of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a small fishing village in Camargue, in the south of France. Van Gogh, in a letter addressed to his friend Bernard, describes the scenario in front of him: "Small green, red and blue boats, so beautiful in shapes and colours that make you think of flowers". The colour fields describe the shape of the boats and recall the Japanese style. The arrangement of the elements and the use of colour, applied in large surfaces in a clear manner and the iridescent colours used, are a clear tribute to oriental art. The canvas is a successful example of harmony between naturalism and symbolism. In Van Gogh, colour is the symbol of passions, while the twisted and dynamic element is the symbol of its existential tension. The life of Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) is practically a single storm; it is all too evident, reading his biography and his words: "In my brain fever or madness, I do not know how to call it, my thoughts have sailed many seas; at moments, as the desperate waves are crashing on the indifferent cliffs, a tumultuous desire to embrace something".
