Almond blossom

Spring blossoms with the Almond Branch; this work by Vincent Van Gogh is created in Saint Rémy in 1890 for the birth of his nephew, called by his brother Theo, with his same name: Vincent. The painter chooses to paint almond branches to best represent birth, a tree with an early flowering that starts spring, a symbol of hope and life but at the same time an allegory of delicacy and fragility.

Spring blossoms with the Almond Branch; this work by Vincent Van Gogh is created in Saint Rémy in 1890 for the birth of his nephew, called by his brother Theo, with his same name: Vincent. In a letter addressed to his mother the artist writes: "I immediately started a canvas for Theo's son, to hang in their bedroom, a sky-blue canvas, on which great white almond blossoms stand out ". The painter chooses to paint almond branches to best represent birth, a tree with an early flowering that starts spring, a symbol of hope and life but at the same time an allegory of delicacy and fragility. There are no dark and dramatic colours that attack the canvas, but strong and vivid ones that represent the joy and the vitality of children. The painter chooses to make a work where there is no trace of pain, a moment of peace in the middle of discouragement and crisis of madness. On the canvas flowers and white buds are highlighted by touches of red and by the many turquoise shades of the background, protagonists of an ethereal beauty, which are remembered with pleasure or forgotten with serenity. In Van Gogh's Almond it is evident the inspiration to Japanese art so much esteemed by Van Gogh and popular in Europe in the second half of the nineteenth century.
