The original work is dated in the period which goes from 1881 to 1886 and it is currently displayed at Dublin City Gallery “The Hugh Lane” in Dublin, thanks to an agreement with the National Gallery in London. Pierre Auguste Renoir uses a different technique on the right side of the painting compared to the left side; this change is due to the 6 years elapsed from the beginning to the end of the drafting of the work. The artist first works on the right side of the work, the most impressionist and revolutionary style is perceived in the child's face and in the colours used. The left side is more academic, in fact in the last part of his career the painter gets closer to tradition as you can see in the female figure in the foreground. The diversity of the painted garments supports the thesis of the realization of the painting over a long period. Renoir depicts a rainy day on a very busy street in Paris, a portrait of vibrant and colourful city life. You can sense the tension between the interested gaze of the elegant young man on the left and the beautiful and humble girl in the foreground.
