Hammamet with the Mosque

The journey in Tunisia that Paul Klee undertakes with August Macke, during which he begins and completes 13 drawings and 35 watercolours, generates a great influence on all his artistic production, an awakening. The journey in Tunisia that Paul Klee undertakes with August Macke, during which he begins and completes 13 drawings and 35 watercolours, generates a great influence on all his artistic production, an awakening. He writes in his diary: "A sense of comfort deep inside me, I feel safe, I do not feel tired. Colour has me. I do not need to try and grab it. He owns me forever, I feel it. This is the meaning of the happy hour: I and colour are one. I am a painter". Hammamet with its mosque represents a glimpse of Tunisia: in the foreground the artist juxtaposes different areas of colour and inserts some stylized elements, among which are some plants and flowers, just outlined. In the background there is the Hammamet mosque, surrounded by a blue sky and some green and red shrubs. During his stay in Africa, Paul Klee begins to prefer warm tones, typical of this geographical area. The light and delicate colours used by the artist give the work an exotic and almost fairy-tale atmosphere.
