This work was created in 1892 by Paul Gauguin and is now kept at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. It is part of a trilogy of paintings that he made during his trip to Tahiti in Polynesia and the title takes the name of Arearea which stands for gaiety and playfulness to signify the relationship between the Tahitians and nature. In the work, dream and reality blend harmoniously: the painter idealizes the environment around him, creating a parallel, magnificent, sometimes surreal world. In this fantasy world he inserts real elements and subjects, engaged in scenes of everyday life. In the foreground we can admire three subjects: the first subject that catches our eyes is the reddish-brown dog that is sniffing something in the meadow, behind him we find female figures, two Tahitian women who are enjoying a moment of relax. One of them seems intent on playing a flute, while the other points her eyes towards the observer. The scene in the background is the result of the imagination of Gauguin. The French painter depicts young girls who are venerating a Tahitian deity represented in all its majesty to emphasize the importance of gods for the protection of men. The combination of colours chosen by the artist gives the idea of a serene, calm and very natural environment: an enchanted territory where men live under the strong arm of the gods and are surrounded by a vigorous nature full of life.
