The original work is dated 1904-1906 and is kept at the Kunsthaus in Zurich, Switzerland. The subject is one of the most represented by Cézanne: the mountain of Sainte-Victoire, located in the south of France, near Aix-en-Provence, his birthplace. In the period of realization of the work the style of the artist undergoes a deep change: it is the colours that create the volumes and it is no longer the lines. Every detail, before being represented, is particularly studied and thought, to be reproduced in its most essential form. The environment is depicted using a series of layers: the wall, the vegetation, the countryside and the mountain. The picture is abstract, the colours are reduced to "spots", preventing us from accurately recognizing an object. The only identifiable shape is that of the mountain, which assumes almost a sacred value, due to its central and majestic position. In the lower part of the composition the tones of green and yellow prevail, while the profile of the mountain is painted in the same colour as the sky from which it emerges. The green vegetation is resumed in small touches even in the upper part of the painting as an upside-down reflection of the earth. Cézanne alternates vertical brushstrokes, with horizontal ones, which regularly align the idea of a wide and prestigious valley. Detaching himself from Impressionism, the painter elaborates his own conception of reality: a personal elaboration aimed at forming a new, concrete image of the world, to be sought not in external reality, but in consciousness.
