William Morris was a British draftsman, poet and writer who lived in 1800. He is considered the forerunner of modern designers and had a considerable influence on the architecture and architects of his time. His works are mainly decorative motifs that supported the return of craftsmanship and manual labour to reconcile the rank of artists to the artisans. Morris was one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelites, along with some fellow students, such as the famous Dante Gabriel Rossetti. According to him, applied art had the same dignity as painting and sculpture; the art had to be accessible to everyone and had to be created by hand, not industrially, even though he was in fact the father of industrial design: he designed wonderful decorative motifs so that artisans and professionals could use them in their works. In his paintings the focus was on the details and the rendering of the surfaces. This composition by Maria Rita Minelli brings together many decorative floral motifs by William Morris in squares and rectangles of various sizes; at the bottom on the right side a photo of the pre-Raphaelite artist.
