A visit to the Royal Botanic Gardens of Kew in London, which hosts the "Gallery Marianne North", has introduced Maria Rita Minelli to this great woman and artist, illustrator and English naturalist. Marianne, who lived in 1800, spent most of her life traveling around the world and painting the flora of exotic countries. Her paintings depict mostly flowers, but also plants, animals and landscapes caught live during the many trips she made to the six continents. During her travels, Marianne spent very long periods in the forests and in contact with nature, portraying a myriad of details of plants and flowers that we can see in her paintings. North loved portraying plants and flowers that caught her attention in their natural environment; she did not bring samples of them at home, as the naturalists of his time used to, but she painted them during her travels from 1869 to 1885 in France, Sicily, North America, Jamaica, Brazil, Tenerife, Japan, Singapore, Borneo, Java, Ceylon , India, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the Seychelles and Chile. She was friend with Charles Darwin, who suggested her the trip to Australia, and she was friend with William Hooker as well, a botanist who was the first director of the Royal Botanical Gardens of Kew. Marianne donated her oil paintings to London Kew Gardens and she commissioned the building that would host them at her own expense. This composition, dedicated to Marianne, expresses all the admiration of Maria Rita Minelli for this woman, born in 1830 from a wealthy family and representative of the Victorian society, who through travel and painting did conquered her freedom and autonomy, choosing not to marry for traveling alone around the world to paint plants and flowers.
