The work dates back to 1515. In 1839 King Carlo Alberto bought it and it became part of the collection of the Royal Library of Turin. Leonardo portrays himself in the foreground: the elderly face is turning three-quarters to the left, while the eye is directed to the right; his face is serious and not at all cheerful, surrounded by long hair and beard. The wrinkles on the forehead, around the eyes and at the sides of the mouth, as well as the long eyebrows and the bald head, they all make it evident the mature age of the painter in the moment of the portrait. The work is full of well-kept details and is considered the only and true self-portrait of the artist. The image that Leonardo gives of himself is that of a "lived" man, cultured and wise, aspects that characterized him even in real life. According to the painter, art can be traced back to science and for this reason, before applying and painting, one had to study and deeply know his subjects first. Considered "the genius of the Italian Renaissance", in addition to painting he dealt with architecture, sculpture, drawings, treatises, sets design, anatomy, music and inventions.
