Lady with an Ermine by Leonardo da Vinci is an oil painting on wood dated 1489-1490 and it is now kept in the Czartoryski Museum in Krakow, Poland. It is certainly one of Leonardo da Vinci's most famous and popular works, in which the artist reaches an extraordinary artistic level. In this painting it is represented a woman on a completely dark background, Cecilia Gallerani, lover of an important nobleman of that time: Ludovico il Moro. The latter had recently received the very prestigious honorary title of knight of the Order of the Ermine of the King of Naples, in fact Leonardo represents the woman while holding in her arms just an ermine. Leonardo overcame the canons of the Renaissance portrait, because he conceived a double rotation: in fact, we can see the face turned to the right, while the bust turned to the left. Her gaze is intense, harmonious and candid, like that of the ermine. Leonardo did not like to make the emotions explicit but hinted, like her smile. Her grace and elegance are emphasized by how she is dressed: her clothing is not overly luxurious, she is without jewels but the necklace of dark pearls and a simple ribbon to hold a veil which is same colour as hair. Even the hand of the woman who caresses the ermine exalts elegance and grace: it has long, and tapered fingers and it is invested by the light.
