“Mount Fuji seen from Kanaya on the Tokaido” is a work of the famous Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai; this xylography is the first of the 10 images added to the 36 views of Mount Fuji after their great success. Thus, the views are in all 46, made between 1826 and 1833. It is a series of large colour woodcuts, a collection of ukiyo-e. Katsushika Hokusai resumes Mount Fuji in all seasons and weather conditions, as well as from different points of view. Other artists as well represents the same Mount, for example the famous Hiroshige, and Hokusai himself creates a collection entitled 100 views of Mount Fuji. This mountain is of course very important in the culture and religion of Japan at that time. It seems that in some cave hidden on the mountain is well kept the potion that would give the long life, an elixir capable of making immortal, a secret from which even the artist of this work is disturbed. Hokusai has finally managed to discover that secret: his art gives him fame and "immortality"!
