The work represents a man travelling on a brown horse with a companion. The snow dominates the landscape, while blue seems to unite the sky and water. The title is Poet traveling in the snow and the author is Katsushika Hokusai.

The protagonist is represented from behind while he is watching the fall of snowflakes on a lake that welcomes water birds on its waters, the subject seems in contemplation of the snowy landscape that surrounds him. Horse and rider seem to be suspended on the rocks that appear steep. The lake and the sky seem to be one and they seem to be separated by the oblique branch of the tree. The colour of the lake and of the sky is the same blue that becomes darker near the rocks. The white birds have the same white colour as the snow falling from the sky and covering the earth and the vegetation.

Tradition has it that the protagonist is Su Shi (in Chinese), poet and statesman of the Song dynasty (1037-1101), known in Japan as Toba

Toba was an important government employee who was exiled to an island, Hainan. Perhaps he is represented in this work on his journey towards exile. He wrote poems about the snow and he created an office called "Snow Room" with walls full of paintings depicting the snow.

This image is part of the series, "True mirror of Chinese and Japanese poetry", which depicts famous Chinese and Japanese poets in different landscapes.

Snow, along with the four seasons and nature, has been very much represented in Japanese art and it is a symbol of purity and emptiness.
