The original work is dated 1921 and is kept at the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, Spain. It is part of a series of "open windows" composed mostly in the same year in Bandol-sur-Mer, where the author is living. Gris depicts some of his favourite objects, giving the painting a personal touch: a guitar, some musical scores, a bottle, some fruit. All the elements are placed in front of an open window. In line with the Cubist style, Gris overlaps several elements: the sea view that can be seen through the window seems to be one with the internal environment; the clouds in the sky enter the room, mingling with the shutters; the objects on the table are drawn in an incomplete way, sometimes giving the idea of being one the continuation of the other. The artist creates a poetic contrast between the colours: the bright marine landscape that can be seen from the window is in sharp contrast with the bower environment in which he inserts a classic cubist still life. Although Gris's canvases appear simple and not very elaborate, they hide in reality games and symbols, correlations of forms and figures of extreme complexity. An interesting and innovative artist, Gris dies when he is only forty years old, due to a kidney crisis.
