This work is dated 1902 and it is by the London painter John William Godward, one of the leading exponents of Victorian Neoclassicism. In 1912, in love with one of his Italian models, he leaves for Italy to live for seven years in Rome where he dedicates himself to his passion for classical antiquity. His stay in Rome leads him to study classical history, refining his pictorial style also in contact with the monumental works of the city that the English painter has the opportunity to admire, study and depict live. This painting depicts a young girl dressed in classic clothing, surrounded by a graceful environment, in full harmony with her style. The woman lies on a large block of marble turning her gaze towards the observer with a dreamy air. Her long black hair gives her a seductive but never vulgar appearance, as does the slightly transparent pink dress that lets you glimpse her legs. The style of Godward is very graceful, enriched by the presence of a pleasant, bright and quiet environment which is embellished with minute floral details. The Victorian-romantic language of the artist is not understood at that time; deeply impressed by the numerous criticisms of his art Godward decides, at the age of 61, to put an end to his life.
