The original work is dated 1910 and it is part of a private collection. London painter, exponent of Victorian Neoclassicism, Godward paints this canvas in Rome, where he has been living for a few years with an Italian model he is in love with. His romantic works, expressions of feelings and moods, have always the same model of girl: graceful and elegant, always dressed in typical Greek and Roman clothing, posing almost like a statue. In this work an ethereal woman is depicted: brown hair gathered, melancholy eyes surrounded by a trickle of makeup, mouth and rosy cheeks. A soft light blue dress, embellished with small pearly buttons, wraps around her body. In line with his style Godward uses a marble wall as background, which is a typical element of the Victorian style, giving it a purely decorative function. In order to provide his works with a mark of authenticity and to reproduce the details in a meticulous way in his paintings, the artist meticulously devotes himself to the study of classical clothing and architecture. Since 1920 most of the neoclassical paintings become the object of ridicule, and the artist's style is irremediably affected. Saddened and disappointed by the failure of his work and for the misunderstanding of his art, Godward committed suicide at the age of 61, leaving a note in which he explained his reasons by writing: "The world is not big enough for me and for a Picasso together ".
