The Allegory of Painting (The Art of Painting)

The original work dates around 1666 and is preserved in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Jan Vermeer depicts a painter from behind as he portrays the model posing in the room. This is probably his spiritual testament.

The painting was owned by Hitler from 1938 to 1946 when it became the property of the Austrian Museum.

The subject portrayed by the painter in the picture is probably intended to represent the Muse Clio, the goddess of history in Greek mythology, daughter of Zeus. This can be seen from the book that the girl is holding in her hand, a symbol of history. She is wearing a laurel wreath and she is also holding a trumpet, symbols of glory.

The canvas on the wall of the room represents the Netherlands, a map from the house where Vermeer himself lives, his mother-in-law's house.

The room is full of objects and textiles and it is depicted with great realism, probably it is the studio of the painter himself. The scene represents the allegory of painting.
