A Centennial of Independence

The original work by Henri Rousseau is dated 1892 and it is kept at The J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, California, in the United States.

The painter represents a feast of the people and the colours of Paris (red and blue) are depicted on the flag in the centre of the painting, next to the national flag. Probably the purpose of this work is to commemorate the centenary of the proclamation of the first French Republic in 1792.

The painting is presented at the Salon des Indépendants in 1892 with the following caption: "The people dance around the two republics, the one of 1792 and the one of 1892, holding hands on the air of: 'Auprès de ma blonde, qu'il fait bon, fait bon dormir'".

Henri Rousseau is mature and skilful in his artistic expression and is now master of the use of colours that he combines with skill, such as ochre on browns and blue on black. The colours are brilliant and the shapes are solid.
