In Bed. The Kiss

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec paints this work with awareness, as he knows very well the world of Parisian nightclubs. The artist likes to portray women, often prostitutes, but never in erotic poses, he seeks the human side of people, whom he portrays even in painful and degenerate moments. This painting, together with others of the same series "In bed" causes a great scandal because in the bed there are two women who kiss with great passion and tenderness, holding in a hug.

The original work is dated 1892 and is kept at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec paints this work with awareness, as he knows very well the world of Parisian nightclubs. The artist likes to portray women, often prostitutes, but never in erotic poses, he seeks the human side of people, whom he portrays even in painful and degenerate moments. This painting, together with others of the same series "In bed" causes a great scandal because in the bed there are two women who kiss with great passion and tenderness, holding in a hug; at that time, it is a taboo, because the society of the Belle Epoque does not accept that realistic attitudes condemned at that time could be portrayed in realistic tones. He is a Post-impressionist painter, he is the first to show the details and perversions of the "bohemian streets", as in this picture, transgressive even if only for representing a kiss exchanged in bed. We understand that he is convinced that this love is pure and sincere by the beauty and sensuality of this canvas, which reveals to us an intimate and warm moment of the two lovers. Henri can see beyond appearances and show his audience the intimate human side of the characters he portrays. He represents the two female bodies in a moment of intimacy and sweetness, as well as passion and familiarity.
