Portraits in the Countryside

The original work by Gustave Caillebotte is dated 1876 and is kept at the Musée Baron Gérard, in Bayeux, France.

The painter portrays four women in the family estate in Yerres, located south-east of Paris. In the foreground, his cousin Marie, Zoe's sister; Zoe was given the painting as a wedding present by the artist; her descendants will donate it later to the museum in which it is still preserved in Bayeux.

At bottom, the woman who reads is the painter's mother, Céleste Daufresne. The landscape is not only the background of the work, but the subject itself, together with the women represented. The result of this ambitious choice is an asymmetrical painting that immediately captures the observer.
