"The Three Ages of Woman" is a painting by Gustav Klimt produced in 1905 and today preserved in the Gallery of Modern Art in Rome. Through the three subjects represented in the work, the author deals with themes that are very dear to him, and already present in his other masterpieces: the fleeting moment, the time that flows inexorably and the uncertainty of life. On one side he depicts a young mother holding her baby in her arms. The woman is keeping her head curved towards the left, in sign of tenderness and maternal love. The baby has a plump face and rosy cheeks, characteristics that communicate a feeling of well-being and protection. The two bodies wrapped around each other seem to form a single figure. Both are depicted with a light and bright complexion and with eyes closed, on a light and golden background, to show a sense of tranquillity, calm. They seem to be in a fairy tale dimension, almost unreal. On the other side we find an old lady, accompanied by a dark and black background. The woman covers her eyes and, through her naked body, expresses a sense of coldness and piety. The subjects are in sharp contrast to each other: through the elderly lady, the artist represents the precariousness of existence and the despair due to the inexorability of the passing time; on the contrary, the young woman and her child appear blissful, dreamy and in their childhood. Here we see a detail of the painting in its most sentimental part: in the foreground a young woman seems to sleep blissfully clutching her baby tenderly in that warm and soft palpable intimacy in the moment of abandonment to dream and rest. Among Klimt's works we could define this as one of the most symbolic. Through the representation of three female subjects the author deals with themes such as childhood, motherhood and old age.
