The original work, also known as "Summer Scene", is dated 1869 and is kept at the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA. The canvas represents a group of young people dressed only in swimsuits, while they enjoy a day of tranquillity on the grass around a pond. To draw this painting, Bazille makes some changes to the human figures previously made in his Parisian studio and then inserts them into the external environment. An outdoor environment that the artist creates “en plein air”, impressionist technique that allows him to highlight the lights and shadows of the surrounding space. The luminosity and brightness of the colours give the work a fresh and joyful air. The fit and balanced bodies of men also make it very harmonious. Despite being classified as an impressionist painter and using many innovative techniques belonging to the movement, unlike painters such as Monet and Renoir, his subjects are well defined, and he is very attentive to details. His greatest artistic achievement lies in the fusion of the human figure with the landscape in a single image. Bazille's life is short but very intense. He makes friends with leading artists of the time, who allow him to refine his technique and express it at its best. He dies very young, at the age of 29, during a battle at the front of Beaune-la-Rolande, enlisted as a volunteer.
