Ferdinand Hodler The Night

The Night

The original work dates 1890 and is kept in the Kunstmuseum in Bern, Switzerland.

The night, because of the realism of the nudes and the attitude of these embracing couples, caused a great scandal in Geneva in 1891 and the painting was thus excluded from the Fine Arts exhibition that took place there. Hodler then organised a private exhibition for a fee, and with the proceeds from it, he went to Paris. The painting, admitted to the Salon of the Société nationale des Beaux-Arts, was noticed by Puvis, Rodin and critics. Hodler felt triumphant, even though he would have to wait until 1900 and the Universal Exhibition, where he won a gold medal, for La Notte to achieve success and fame.

The original work dates 1890 and is kept in the Kunstmuseum in Bern, Switzerland.

Ferdinand Hodler represents himself as the ghost of death wakes him up to take him with him. Around there are men and women who sleep. The couples are placed in depthless scenarios dominated by the rhythmic distribution of figures and lines. Men are himself at different times of his life and women are Augustine Dupin, his former partner and mother of his son and Bertha Stucki who was his wife in a short and unhappy marriage.

For Hodler, the meaning of the work is universal by virtue of its symbolic character: it is not only the representation of a particular moment but the evocation of the very meaning of night and death. Realism is strong and combined with a rigorous decorative order, which thus becomes the hallmark of Hodler's symbolism.
