The original work is dated 1907 and is kept at the Neue Pinakothek in Munich, Germany. Considered to be one of the founders of modern art in Austria and Germany, Ferdinand Hodler is one of the greatest exponents of symbolism. Hodler prefers to paint landscapes and portraits. He realizes the sketches on the spot choosing places of classical beauty and then indoors in his studio, painting, he transforms them into breath taking sceneries. Mainly he devoted himself to the representation of Swiss nature, focusing on different subjects: mountains, lakes, trees and streams. This painting is one of the 13 variants with which, between 1895 and 1911, Ferdinand Hodler immortalized the view of Lake Geneva seen from the village of Chexbres. The canvas depicts a flowery meadow on the lake; in the distance there are the Savoyard Alps, almost framed by the blue sky, which is the background. Blue is the predominant colour, used in different shades in order to paint the mirror of water, the sky and the mountains, it highlights the unity that runs between the different natural elements. The landscape for Hodler is characterized by the elimination of what is secondary and superfluous: the observer must have a noble image of nature and for this reason the work must be deprived of all the insignificant details. In this way, Hodler aims to exalt the emotion that is felt in front of the magnificence of nature that, according to him, remains the source of the creative act. The artist died in Geneva on May 19, 1918, seized by a lung disease that forced him not to leave home during the last years of his life.
