Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec the Impressionist who designed posters

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

Henri de Toulouse Lautrec was a French post-impressionist painter, defined as "an implacable observer, whose brush did not lie". Toulouse-Lautrec was born in Paris in 1864, from an aristocratic family, with a rare disease that brought him physical manifestations similar to dwarfism. He was educated from childhood by a painter friend of his father who continued to attend even after high school, in his Parisian studio. He came into contact with many artists, including Vincent Van Gogh. Lautrec's interest was for the characters, the rest was considered accessory by him. The Impressionists influenced him and he approached the work of Degas. In the 80s and 90s he participated in various exhibitions and approached the Nabis and the magazine "La Revue Blanche", as well as the world of theater. He acquired a certain fame, travelled and exhibited his works abroad: Belgium, the Netherlands, England, Spain, Russia. The Moulin Rouge and Montmartre with its nightclubs were often represented by the painter and were his home and studio at times. Here he contracted syphilis, one of the causes of his early death at the age of 37, in 1901, together with alcohol. The works of Toulouse Lautrec have their own style, despite the many influences that he assimilated over the years, his paintings were the result of careful work. His subjects were often prostitutes and Parisian nightlife characters. He studied the academic tradition in depth, and then created totally innovative and non-conformist paintings. He worked in satirical magazines, such as "Le Rire", and produced numerous advertising posters. Lautrec lived through its era, the Belle Epoque, years of modernity and innovation.
