Amedeo Modigliani. Modì and the stylization of female faces

Amedeo Modigliani

Modigliani was born in 1884 into a Jewish family in Livorno of a French mother and an Italian father, both atheists. One of his brothers, Giuseppe Emanuele, became an anti-fascist lawyer and politician. The Italian painter was physically fragile and in poor health and his mother, a teacher, took care of his education. Ever since he was a boy he loved to draw and managed to learn the first pictorial notions from Guglielmo Micheli, a talented pupil of Giovanni Fattori who was very famous in Livorno, hence the influence of the Macchiaioli on Amedeo.

He attended schools and courses in Florence and Venice, until 1906, when he moved to Paris, Montmartre, where the works of Toulouse-Lautrec and then Cézanne deeply influenced him. Contemporary to Cubism and Futurism, his creative genius was totally original and independent. He painted quickly and never modified his works. He also dedicated himself to sculpture, which he had to abandon because of the dust that aggravated his tuberculosis. The portraits of artist friends soon became portraits of nudes, as a result of which his first exhibition was closed, after some works were declared indecent. In 1918 she moved to Provence with Jeanne Hébuterne and waited for her daughter, who was born before returning to Paris in 1919. The two companions portrayed each other, but Amedeo's excesses in drugs and alcohol worsened the state of his already weak health and he died in 1920 leaving Jeanne, a few days after her second birth, who took her life the day after his death. The artist's mother, in Livorno, took care of the girl, an orphan at just 20 months of age. Modigliani's personality and the characteristics of his painting do not fit into any of the many artistic currents existing in the first 20 years of the 1900s. He was an exception, considered today one of the greatest artists of the last century. The Italian painter is famous for his female portraits characterized by stylized faces and tapered hills. We find his works exhibited in the most famous museums in the world.
