John Collier was born in London on 1850
His families were among the best known and most powerful of their time. He was a member of the Brotherhood of the Pre-Raphaelites and was also an honorable member.
He curiously married two daughters of Thomas Henry Huxley, president of the Royal Society.
The first wife, Marianne, died immediately after her daughter Joyce's birth; two years later she married Ethel, her younger sister.
He was especially appreciated as one of the most important portrait painters of his time and there are numerous portraits of members of his family.
As part of the Pre-Raphaelites, he painted subjects related to medieval and Nordic mythology. These include Guinevere's Maying, Sleeping Beauty and Lady Godiva.
