Swiss Symbolist painter, born in Bern in 1853. He was a forerunner of German expressionism.
In his early artistic maturity he prefers to paint landscapes and portraits. Make sketches on site by choosing places of classic beauty and then indoors in his studio, painting, transforming them into breathtaking scenery.
Afterwards his art evolved and combined the influence of different genres, in particular symbolism and art nouveau.
He himself called his personal form of symbolism "paralellism".
He died in Geneva in 1918, leaving several paintings unfinished that portray the Swiss city.
