The original work is dated 1881-1882 and is kept at the Courtauld Gallery in London. Édouard Manet creates this painting in the last years of his life and this is considered the masterpiece of his late production: a delightful synthesis of impressionist technique and colour, his spiritual and artistic testament. The black colour, the representation of a moment of daily life and a still life are typical details of Manet's painting who is not consecrated by the public even after this masterpiece.

The bar depicted is often attended by the artist, who describes it in detail, even if he paints it in his studio, asking the protagonist to pose for him.
