This work by Claude Monet is dated 1886. After a short concession to the Louvre Museum, it is now kept at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. There is not just one version of "Woman with a sunshade" but there are many. The original canvas is entitled "the walk" and its main characters are Camille and Jean Monet, respectively wife and son of the French artist. The painting is made "en plein air", an impressionist technique that manages to capture the most hidden and difficult-to-capture aspects of nature. The subject of this canvas is Suzanne Hoschédé, daughter of Alice, Monet's second wife. The woman is depicted in a flowery field, in the middle of a windy day, holding an umbrella to protect herself from the air and the sun. The lady with the umbrella, framed from below, stands out on the rest of the landscape, which remains a central element of the work. Suzanne, protagonist of the painting, is surrounded both by the warm tones of flowers and grass, and by the softer shade of the cloudy sky. The lightly applied brushstrokes and the oil colours used, favour an alternation of lights and shadows. The brightness of the landscape makes us feel a fresh and welcoming atmosphere. The alternation of cold and warm colours, and the intelligent use of light and shadow give the observer the feeling that the woman's dress, her scarf, the clouds in the sky and the grass on which she walks, are moved by the wind. Monet, by painting this masterpiece, rediscovers his passion for portraits, set aside for some time to devote himself to the reproduction of landscapes.
