The original painting is exhibited at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and is dated 1900. In France, in the Norman countryside, about seventy kilometres from Paris, Giverny appears, a small town where, since 1883, until his death in 1926, Monet has been spending the years of his life. The painting depicts in the background the villa where Monet and his family live, surrounded by tall green plants and numerous pink and purple flowers. The flowers were sown in "strategic" points around the villa. Monet created a place full of colours, lights and magical reflections, suitable to be reproduced in his masterpieces. The garden was created and studied by Monet himself and it is tangible in it his love for oriental gardens, especially Japanese ones. In Giverny, we can still find the house and the garden that are the subject and source of inspiration for many of his works. About Giverny he said: "Here the light is unique, it is not the same anywhere else in the world". Looking at the painting, you have the feeling of entering a secret garden, an enchanted world, made of floral compositions and brushstrokes of colour. The landscape, which has become, in the painter’s immediate visual impression, a collection of vague shapes and spots, gives the observer the impression of a suggestive and indefinite emotion.
