La Grenouillère is a painting that Claude Monet creates in 1869 and that is now kept at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The scene is set in the picturesque village of Bougival located near Paris, where the islet of Croissy is depicted, dividing the Seine into two branches, connected to a restaurant by a jetty. The restaurant, located on the left, has been set up on a raft moored to the shore, at the centre of the work is the islet where bourgeois characters are depicted about to have fun amid the lush vegetation, while in the foreground moored boats are painted. The name Grenouillère in French, besides meaning "pond of the frogs", indicates the cheerful and joyous chatter of the girls gathered for fun and to exchange gossip. In this work Monet draws the swimmers with short brush strokes, his attention is focused on the movements of the Seine where the sunlight and the colours of the surrounding nature are reflected. The painter wants to represent a sparkling summer day and, as a whole, the painting creates a realism that is given above all by the wide and dense brushstrokes used for the water of the river.
