Bordighera

This work by the French artist Claude Monet is dated 1884 and it is now kept at the Art Institute of Chicago. Monet has been staying in the beautiful town of Bordighera for 79 days, for him it is a source of inspiration and marks an unforgettable passage in his memory. In this painting the blue of the sea stands out, a very strong colour attenuated by the less intense blue of the sky. The cool colours of the background highlight the bright landscape created with a variety of tones and warm colours, rendered by small brushstrokes containing "moments", i.e. containing emotions.

This work by the French artist Claude Monet is dated 1884 and it is now kept at the Art Institute of Chicago. Monet has been staying in the beautiful town of Bordighera for 79 days, for him it is a source of inspiration and marks an unforgettable passage in his memory. His works stand out for representing subjects in an immediate way, especially in painting landscapes and painting en plein air: It is about painting outdoors to capture even the subtlest nuances created by light. In this painting by Monet the blue of the sea stands out, a very strong colour attenuated by the less intense blue of the sky. The cool colours of the background highlight the bright landscape created with a variety of tones and warm colours, rendered by small brushstrokes containing "moments", i.e. containing emotions. The traveller of today, following the footsteps of Monet, remains struck by one circumstance: that world, which had struck the imagination and the heart of the artist, has not changed. A century and a quarter have not distorted Bordighera. Recently, the Ligurian town, to witness the magical bond established with the French painter, has dedicated gardens to him, which are part of the Moreno Gardens now disappeared. "Everything is wonderful, and every day the countryside is more beautiful, and I am bewitched by the country. Here everything is beautiful, and the weather is superb" Claude Monet writes in 1884.
