Boats at Argenteuil

Regatta in Argenteuil is an oil painting on canvas made in 1872 and kept at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. Claude Monet paints the canvas at Argenteuil. He lives here for a few years, as do Manet and Caillebotte, friends and colleagues. The subjects that mostly attract the artist's interest are the landscapes and here you can see a glimpse of the Seine where there are sailing boats racing on the river. Regatta in Argenteuil is an oil painting on canvas made in 1872 and kept at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. Claude Monet paints the canvas at Argenteuil where he has lived since 1871 and where he meets some fellow impressionist artists such as Camille Pissarro, Auguste Renoir and Alfred Sisley. Monet lives here for a few years, as do Manet and Caillebotte, friends and colleagues. The subjects that mostly attract the artist's interest are the landscapes and here you can see a glimpse of the Seine where there are sailing boats racing on the river, while among the green vegetation we can see some houses and people: the reflection of the light on the water and the combination of complementary colours make the subject particularly bright. The outlines are not well defined, the chiaroscuro is absent as well as the sense of volume, while the depth is highlighted by houses, trees and characters. The broken brushstrokes draw the shape of the boats, of the vegetation and of the reflected houses. Monet's purpose is to fix on the canvas the flow of water and the changes that the landscape undergoes due to the light; he performs a real pictorial research, saying he wants to seize the elusive and describing the light as something that imposes itself on colour. This painting is typically impressionist; in fact, the impressionist style is born in Argenteuil according to critics.
