Bathers in La Grenouillère is a painting by Claude Monet dated 1869 and kept in the National Gallery in London. La Grenouillère (called playfully "Pond of the frogs") is a meeting place for the small middle class, on the edge of the Seine, so nicknamed for the presence of loose women, whose cheerful and sharp chatter recalls the frogs’ cry. Monet loves to portray the moment in everyday life. Precisely for this reason he works outdoor (en plein air), so that he can capture the best moments to paint and capture all the reflections that light creates at different times of the day. The painting depicts some boats moored on the banks of the Seine, near some piers. On the left we find two well-dressed women, who walk conversing on the pier. On the opposite side is a man with a jacket and a hat. On his left there are two women in bathing suits who try to court him, an attitude that is suggested to us by their flirtatious and mischievous pose. In the background, barely sketched with quick strokes, there are people in the water, who are probably having a swimming lesson. The quick touches of colour, almost representing stains, give the painting a spontaneous and realistic character. In the same year Monet is at the Grenouillère, other friends of his, including Renoir, also works there. The meeting place on the Seine is the protagonist of many works created by Impressionist painters.
