The original work is dated 1912 and is kept at the Wilhlem-Hack-Museum in the city of Ludwigshafen, Germany. Passionate about music and the arts in general, August Macke dedicates this "explosion of colours" to Johann Sebastian Bach, as suggested by the title of the painting. The abstract representation of shapes and colours has a very clear purpose: communication. Through a non-real representation of a concept, the artist tries to express his thoughts and emotions, without imitating or taking a cue from the reality in which he lives. The abstract drawings are also inventions of the artist. Once the subject and its common image have been eliminated, art becomes an autonomous expression of man's psychological and emotional life. In "Coloured Composition" Macke frees his imagination and through the use of various colours he tries to inspire strong inner emotions in the observer. A source of inspiration for the abstract technique of Macke is, in 1911, the close collaboration with the group "Der Blaue Reiter" (the blue knight), founded by Vassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc. The movement has not a real manifesto, but it approaches the thought of the French Fauves, for a fundamental lyrical and joyful sense of life. Macke contributes to the group during the 1911 exhibition with some of his masterpieces. In 1914, the same year that the movement breaks up, the artist is killed in war.
