This work by Alfons Mucha is dated 1896 and it is one of the most important representatives of Art Nouveau. This form of art, whose name means "new art" is characterized by elaborate patterns, lines, rich colours and depictions of women, especially young and attractive. Among the works by Mucha, one of the most popular is "Zodiac", originally conceived as a page of a calendar for the company in which the artist works. The painting depicts, on a circular background that incorporates the twelve signs of the zodiac, the majestic profile of a woman whose elegant beauty is underlined by her regal posture and refined jewellery. The subject assumes almost an angelic appearance, thanks to the elegant and sophisticated image that the artist paints: her blond hair that resembles that of a cherub, the zodiacal signs that surround her head almost forming a halo, the jewels that enhance her face. An innovative aspect of Mucha's painting is also the insertion of floral elements with the function of enhancing the vitality of female beauty and transforming it into a symbol of the natural world. Mucha also possessed a great ability to use symbolism: through different representations of women, the main theme of all his works, he was able to give them an ethereal image: dressed in wide tunics and hair softly gathered on the nape; seductive and bewitching: immersed in the pleasure of smoking, her long hair is turned into coils and the smoke rises like a sinuous ribbon of silk.
