Alfons Mucha is a painter of Czech origin, born in 1860. At the beginning of his career, after moving to Paris, he becomes an advertiser ante litteram and begins to represent various female figures, highly appreciated at that time, according to a very personal style. In a second moment he decides to devote himself exclusively to art, becoming an Art Nouveau or Liberty style artist. One of his most cherished themes is that of the seasons. In this work four maidens are depicted in four panels arranged next to each other. Starting from the left, with long golden hair and a white dress, we can admire Spring, characterized by freshly blossomed flowers. Summer is represented by a charming girl with long red hair that recalls the colours, as well as the flowers behind her, on which she is lying. Her sinuous body is covered by a veil, which reveals the beauty of her shapes. A female figure with a flowing brunette hair depicts Autumn, as we can see from the falling leaves with the typical colours of this season, the bunches of grapes and other fruits. Finally, the cold Winter as a young woman wrapped in a warm white coat, which recalls the colour of the snow at her feet. This print on canvas is rightfully one of the most famous works of Mucha and it constitutes the manifesto of his art.
